Johnson County Divorce Records
Divorce is known as "dissolution of marriage" in Iowa. When spouses file to dissolve their marriages in the Johnson County District Court, the Clerk of Court produces a case file where all information and documents generated from the ensuing proceedings will be organized. These records, commonly referred to as divorce records, are publicly accessible under Iowa’s Open Records Act and Court Rules. Notably, a unique rule in Iowa is that most divorce records remain closed to the public until the court enters the final decree (Iowa Code § 598.26(1)).
Members of the public can view divorce case records via the Iowa Courts Online Electronic Document Record Search system or via the Iowa Judicial Branch Electronic Document Management System (if a case party). Access is also available via courthouse public access terminals or by contacting the Johnson County Clerk of Court’s office.
Available case information includes the parties’ names, case number, filing date, and the date the divorce was decreed by the court, as well as the actual filings of the case (petitions, orders, notices, affidavits, motions, receipts, settlement agreements, etc.). Some records (e.g., full Social Security numbers) are confidential and only dispersed to legally entitled parties, such as the litigants.
